Elk Pass

A wolf and I passed each other during my early morning climb to Elk Pass. I have seen few other large animals on this trip other than deer in Banff and sheep on the Smith Dorrien Hwy.

At the pass, the border between Alberta and BC, as well as the end of parkland, I met two men from Cranbrook. They were kind and took a picture of me at the pass. They asked if I had seen any Elk. I told them that I had seen a wolf. ‘That is why there are no Elk’ they said. I wished them a good day.

Further down my descent, through large swaths of clear cut, I met a man dressed in a new camoflage jumpsuit holding a rifle. His friends were in the distance looking for something. ‘What are you looking for?” I asked. ‘Anything with 4 legs’ he said. I wished him a good day.

On my continued descent, many trucks passed slowing down to limit dust and gravel splatter. Some did not.

I realize I am completely unaware of hunting regulations and am certainly in no position to judge from my urban perspective. Lots to learn.

Am happy that the wolf was in a Park. I am sure he knows the park boundaries.
