After a hearty breakfast of Mexican eggs and a bike loaded with 6l of water I was off on a direct route on the salt flats instead of on the sandy and rocky shore road. Losing my way a few times had me deep in sand or deep in salty wet mud. I readjusted, walking my way out of trouble, and more or less followed the planned route – a route that changes with extreme high tides due to storm surges. The way took me through a number of settlements but no one seemed there. There were no open signed stores when I passed through. As the sun started to set I contemplated sleeping out but was keen on getting a good meal. I rolled into San Juanico at sunset and made it to a beach bar for ceviche and a Pacifico before checking into a cheap hotel room for the night.
