Laguna San Ignacio at Antonio’s EcoCamp

Left San Ignacio late in the morning to take in the square and Mission bells. The ride started with a climb and then long descent on pavement for 50 km. The final ride beside the salt flats was a sandy gravel road to where the laguna widens. It is in the deeper parts of this…

San Ignacio

A long ride up a gentle alluvial fan that starts in the ocean as marshes and salt flats. The ride then skirts the mountains to the oasis town of San Ignacio. The mission here dates back to the early 1700’s. Found a great place to camp right next to town in an established place.

Laguna Ojo de Liebre

An incredible day on the water observing Gray whales. This place was very different in the not so distant past. Whalers would come here to harvest whales easily. In those years and for decades later these whales, known as Devilfish, were aggressive and dangerous. Now, a few decades later they have learned that boats are…

Guerrero Negro

After two long riding days it was time for a break. Benjamin joined for a morning whale tour into the bay at Guerrero Negro. The history of this town includes indentured workers(slaves) from China, colonial and American whalers, the Mitsibushi cooperation who owns 49% of the nationalized(51%) Salt Company and most recently a UN Heritage…

Punta Prieta

Pleasant surprise after a stunning ride through valleys of giant cacti. Restaurant and hotel providing a fitting end to a day of long climbing and outstanding descent with Benjamin, a swiss cyclist, also on a solo Baja trip. We covered the 115 km in time for a nice dinner as the sun was setting.

Rancho Grande

Stunning camping inside a sheltered hut. A store with provisions was nearby. The sea view was much better than looking back to seemingly neverending construction projects.

Puertecitos

A day’s ride south of San Felipe this small town sits on a peninsula with a hotspring at its point.

San Felipe

Beautiful descent from the cold mountain air in Lazaro Cardenas through sage and cacti lands to the Golfo de California and the busy town of San Felipe. Off season now, the coastline is dotted with holiday communities and resorts, catering to off-road motorbikes or quads and retired folk. With tailwinds I will now head south…

Lazaro Cardenas

Bundled up with all of my clothing this morning for a rainy ride out after a Rosita breakfast. Climb up took longer than expected but I managed to stay warm in spite of the dampness everywhere. Blue sky teased all day and the final descent for the night was incredible.

Ojos Negros

This town is a well known resupply spot for the Baja Divide(BD) bikepacking route. While I may follow some sections of the BD, I am opting for an easier path south. Getting here from Ensenada was not far in distance, but considerable in elevation. Chilled and wet I decided to stay at the local hotel.…

Ensenada

I was not looking forward to the day. The weather channel was predicting armegedon again. With a break in the rain at 6:48, I headed out to the border. I could see patches of blue sky which was quite exciting. The rain did come but I managed to ride through mud and flooded roads to…

San Ysidro, CA

Early morning flight to San Diego into an atmospheric river that was dropping a season’s worth of rain from San Fransisco to Northern Baja. Built the bike under an overhang just outside the baggage check area. The wind blew my sleeping pad into a passing traveller who unwittingly stopped it from disappearing. The ride south…
