Otaru

Blue sky morning ride to the port town of Otaru and our first view of the sea of Japan. A visual feast of transportation modes – cars, busses, trains, trucks, and canal boats. By 4pm we were on our ferry to Honshu; an overnight voyage with outdoor hot baths on the Sea of Japan.

Sapporo

The ride out of the national park along the eastern bank of Lake Shikotsu was stunning. We left the lake on a long climb to the pass that then sent us down into Sapporo. A closed campground and sunset at 5 led us to look for a last minute hotel deal – and find one…

Hokkaido Arrival

An incredible start to our cycling trip from Hokkaido to Kyushu. After a visit to the hot spring in the airport, we assembled our bikes and were on our way along a rail trail to Lake Shikotsu. Autumn is on the same timeline here as it is at home. The trail feels at times like…

Hurtin In Haliburton
Amazing Saturday in Haliburton on my stripped down Surly Disc Trucker. A great warm up to the upcoming trip to Japan. Proudly completed 135 km (5 laps) in 7:20. https://hurtininhaliburton.com/ https://results.raceroster.com/v2/en-US/results/5t4ezc3jvhh7fxn9/detail/fh62yf7bp4zeur3v

Buenos Aries

Cycling through the streets of Buenos Aries is a joy. Architecture overwhelms you visually at every turn. When it doesn’t the street art brings the streets to life. It is clearly difficult for many in Argentina today in a place that reminds citizens and visitors of their history with monuments, cemeteries, and signs. Coffee houses, restaurants,…

Ushuaia

Ushuaia bustles with all types of travellers; Argentinians on their summer vacation, backpackers, motorcyclists, and cyclists, all checking out the Fin del Mundo, alongside Antarctic bound folk on cruise ships. The place reminds me of a mash-up of the BC Westcoast with the Alberta Rockies. The treeless alpine is never far away. Neither is rain,…

Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego

After a lazy domingo in Ushuaia and a morning of logistics(locate bike box, confirm flights, etc) I headed west to the end(or beginning) of the Pan American Highway. The Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego is beautiful and reminds me very much of British Columbia. A nice day of riding smooth dirt roads that the park…

Paso Fronterizo de Sebastian

Late start after taking a break from wild camping. Cross winds for the first 80 km turned to tail winds for a speedy finale to the day. Grasslands slowly show more green and colour.

Lago Azur, Argentina

Rolled into Rio Gallegos after a relatively quick descent from Esparanza. Definitely not a tourist town. Military presence, past and present, is pronounced with many monuments to battles, commanders, and lives lost. Continued on to Lago Azur for the night.
